Origin of Data Set

Murray Cox initiated Inside Airbnb in 2014, embarking on a project where he scraped data from the Airbnb website to compare it with publicly released Airbnb data. In the project’s early stages, Murray Cox self-funded the initiative, but as it expanded, it garnered support through donations, collaborations, sponsorships, and partnerships with community entities.

Inside Airbnb’s data continues to be sourced from the Airbnb website, where publicly available information is systematically scraped and compiled. This information encompasses various details about Airbnb listings, including host information, availability, listing names, and ratings and reviews. The collected data undergoes a meticulous process of verification, cleansing, analysis, and aggregation to ensure precision.

Inside Airbnb emphasizes the “fair use” of information for non-commercial derivation, fostering public analysis, discussion, and community benefit. The site’s overarching goal is to empower communities by providing easily accessible information regarding Airbnb short-term rentals in their neighborhoods. The team has expanded beyond Murray Cox, now including a diverse group of knowledgeable researchers on its Advisory Board and team. It is crucial to note that Inside Airbnb maintains no affiliation with or endorsement from Airbnb or any of its competitors.
